BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING...

I didn't either, so pull up a chair and grab your coffee.

A bit of back history (though I tend to not reminisce too much): I used to play guitar in a cover band called Mary's Basement. Was in it from 2013-2017. Was fun, but like anything else in life, things have to come to an end. Only the way my tenure ended with that band wasn't the most pleasant. I can squarely blame myself for how things took such a downturn but the personalities in the band were all over the map. As a result, I was out.

I would see someone from the band here and there, since most of us live in the same town. Some small talk would ensue but it was clear that I was pretty much a non-entity as they moved on with a new guitar player. I moved on with my own music, and then decided last May to hang it up as teaching was and still is my life path.

Last night I took a trip to the Blue Moon in Wyckoff to see two of the guys from the band give an acoustic performance. They seemed happy to see me, and yes I get along with their guitarist Dave, definitely a chill person and we always get geeky about gear when we meet up. But what I did not expect was...

Most of the band showed up! Big hugs, lots of laughs, some chats about "remember this show" and "who was that person who sang Nirvana and then split?" I didn't expect to stay long but was there til after 10 when the restaurant packed it in. The vibes were right, the night was great, weather was perfect. The planets lined up nicely too. Think we all had to meet up at some point in time to hash things out and feel closure. I know that's how it felt for me.

I was asked "Would you ever consider playing a song here and there?" I had to say "no" because I am realistic (maybe too much?) plus while it was nice going through some memories, it was best for me to leave things as they are and focus on where I am in my life right now. I cannot see myself performing anymore, as my anxiety had gotten worse over time. Even the drummer Tommy said to me lat night "You look more relaxed, I like this."

Me too.

BTW: I did something the other night that I never tried before. I made a short video playing two new riffs from a song I have been sitting on for a while. No, I don't see myself recording like I had hoped but for now, here's the two riffs for your dancing and dining pleasure (and no, I am not saying the title...)

Rough and sloppy but once it's fully realized, stand back! Enjoy...
