A while back, I got to befriend an amazing and unique guitarist named Michelle Qureshi. I saw something she posted on Twitter, gave it a listen and was like "Wow, this reminds me a bit of some Michael Hedges but she's doing her own thing!" I wrote her thinking she would say "Thanks" and blow me off. But glad I was wrong. We became good friends and then she asked me something that nobody ever asked me before...
"Would you do a video with me?"
At first I was thinking "I don't know, what would I do?" She had this idea of me playing a shred solo over one of her compositions. Knowing her work, I said "I can give it a try" but admit I kept putting it to the side. I really didn't want to make her look bad and have her friends/fans say "What were you thinking with THIS guy?!"
I sent her some videos of me shredding in various keys, and she said for me to play something on top of what she played. Gave me the chords and off I went. Recorded five different solos and she picked the one where the first thing I did was a sweep pick over an E minor chord. She made the video, sent it to me for approval and I was in shock at how great it lined up. Granted, some of my lines are a bit over-the-top but she liked it, and that worked for me.
The video is on the MUSIC page of my website so feel free to check it out. It's also on my Facebook and Twitter pages; Michelle posted it to her Instagram too. We hope to do more videos like this in the future.
Maybe I'll downgrade from 64th notes to 32nd notes next time?
